Short answer: A Hong Kong visit visa is needed if your passport is not on Hong Kong’s visa-free list, or if you want to stay longer than your visa-free period. You apply to the Hong Kong Immigration Department (ImmD) with form ID 1003A, a passport copy, a photo, proof of money and your travel plans. You can apply online, by post or through a Chinese embassy where you live. Processing normally takes about four weeks, and approved visitors receive an e-Visa.

What is a Hong Kong visit visa?
A Hong Kong visit visa is permission to enter Hong Kong for a short stay. It covers tourism, visiting family or friends, attending business meetings and passing through on the way somewhere else. It does not let you work, study or start a business.
Hong Kong runs its own immigration system, separate from mainland China. That surprises many first-time travellers. A China visa does not let you into Hong Kong, and a Hong Kong visit visa does not let you into the mainland. If your trip includes both, plan two separate applications.
The Hong Kong visit visa is issued by the Immigration Department in Hong Kong itself. Chinese embassies and consulates abroad only collect applications and pass them on. That is why decisions can take longer than people expect: your file usually travels to Hong Kong and back.
Do you need a Hong Kong visit visa?
Many nationalities can visit Hong Kong without a visa. Depending on your passport, the visa-free stay is anywhere from 7 to 180 days. British citizens, for example, can usually stay up to 180 days without a visa. You need a Hong Kong visit visa if:
- your nationality is not on ImmD’s visa-free list
- you want to stay longer than your visa-free period allows
- you have been refused entry before and want certainty before you fly
- you hold a travel document that is not accepted for visa-free entry
Check your nationality on the ImmD “Visa Requirements for Visitors” page before you start. Rules change, so check again shortly before you travel. Indian nationals, for instance, have their own pre-arrival registration route and apply directly to ImmD rather than through a Chinese embassy.
How do you apply for a Hong Kong visit visa, step by step?
The Hong Kong visit visa process is simple once you know the order. Follow these eight steps.
- Check you need a visa. Look up your passport on the ImmD visa requirements list. If you can enter visa-free for the length of your trip, you do not need to apply.
- Download form ID 1003A. It is free on the ImmD website. Fill it in with your details exactly as printed in your passport, including middle names.
- Find a sponsor if you can. A Hong Kong company, or a Hong Kong resident aged 18 or over who knows you, can fill in form ID 1003B. A sponsor is optional, but it helps ImmD verify your visit.
- Collect your documents. Use the checklist in the next section. Make clear copies and keep originals safe.
- Choose how to submit. Apply online through GovHK, post the forms to ImmD Headquarters in Tseung Kwan O (yourself or through your sponsor), or hand them in at the Chinese embassy or consulate where you live.
- Pay the fee. The current amount is on the ImmD fee table. Online you can pay by card. By post you need a cashier order or bank draft, never cash.
- Wait for the decision. ImmD normally needs about four weeks after it receives every document. It will not start on an incomplete file.
- Save your e-Visa. On arrival, show your passport and the e-Visa QR code on your phone or a printed A4 copy at the immigration counter.
What documents do you need for a Hong Kong visit visa?
A complete file is the biggest factor you control. For a Hong Kong visit visa, ImmD asks for:
- Form ID 1003A, completed and signed, with a recent passport photo attached
- A copy of your passport’s personal details page, showing issue and expiry dates
- Proof of money, such as three to six months of bank statements, tax records or a salary slip
- Proof of employment if you have a job, such as a letter from your employer
- Your travel plans, including a flight itinerary and accommodation
- Proof of your purpose: a tour itinerary for holidays, an invitation letter for business, or proof of your relationship with the person you are visiting
- Sponsor documents if you have a sponsor: form ID 1003B plus a Business Registration Certificate for a company, or a Hong Kong ID card copy for an individual
If your sponsor is a non-permanent Hong Kong resident, they also send a copy of their travel document with their latest arrival stamp or extension label. Our guide to visa cover letters shows how to explain your trip in a short letter, and the rules for photos are in digital photos for visa applications.
Can someone in Hong Kong sponsor your visit visa?
Yes. A sponsor can make your Hong Kong visit visa application easier to verify, especially for family or business visits. There are two kinds of sponsor:
- A company in Hong Kong. It fills in form ID 1003B and adds a copy of its Business Registration Certificate.
- An individual who is at least 18, lives in Hong Kong as a genuine resident and knows you personally. They fill in form ID 1003B and add a copy of their Hong Kong identity card.
Sponsors can also post the complete application to ImmD for you. This is often faster than going through an embassy, because the papers reach Hong Kong directly.
How much does a Hong Kong visit visa cost?
The fee is set by ImmD and published in its fee table. It is charged per application and is not refunded if the visa is refused. When you apply through a Chinese embassy or consulate, they may add their own handling charge. If you post your application, pay with a cashier order or bank draft made out as ImmD instructs. Never send cash.
Budget for these extra costs too:
- passport photos that meet the rules
- courier or registered post
- translation of documents that are not in English or Chinese
- travel insurance, which ImmD does not require but which is wise for any trip
How long does a Hong Kong visit visa take?
ImmD says it normally needs about four weeks after it receives all the required documents. If it asks for something extra, the clock effectively restarts when that document arrives. Applications through a Chinese embassy can take longer because of the extra handling.
We recommend applying at least six weeks before you travel. That leaves time to answer questions and still keep your flight dates. Avoid booking non-refundable flights until your Hong Kong visit visa is approved.
What does the Hong Kong e-Visa look like?
If your Hong Kong visit visa is approved, ImmD issues an e-Visa. It is an electronic document with your details and a QR code. You can:
- keep it on your phone
- print it on A4 paper
- do both, which is the safest option
At the immigration counter you show your passport and the e-Visa, and the officer scans the QR code. Visas issued through Chinese missions or the Hong Kong offices in Beijing and Shanghai may instead come as a label stuck in your passport.

What are the most common Hong Kong visit visa mistakes?
Most delays and refusals come from small, avoidable problems. Watch out for these:
- Applying through the wrong channel. If you live outside Hong Kong, use the Chinese mission where you live, unless your nationality is told to apply directly to ImmD.
- Sending cash by post. Postal fees must be a cashier order or bank draft.
- Weak proof of money. One statement with a large recent deposit raises questions. Three to six months of normal activity reads much better.
- No clear purpose. “Tourism” with no plan is harder to approve than a simple day-by-day itinerary.
- Faxing only. You may fax forms first, but the visa is only issued once the originals arrive.
- Names that do not match. Every form must match your passport exactly.
What can you do on a Hong Kong visit visa?
A Hong Kong visit visa lets you do what visitors normally do: sightseeing, visiting family, attending meetings and conferences, and transiting. You cannot:
- take paid or unpaid work
- start or join a business
- enrol as a student
- stay longer than the period stamped or shown on your e-Visa
If you want to work or study in Hong Kong, you need a different visa, usually sponsored by an employer or a school.
A real example: a family visit to Hong Kong
Imagine Amina, a teacher living in Nairobi, wants to visit her brother who works in Hong Kong. Her passport is not visa-free. She fills in form ID 1003A and attaches her photo. Her brother fills in form ID 1003B and adds a copy of his Hong Kong ID card and his latest arrival stamp.
Amina adds six months of bank statements, a letter from her school confirming her job and approved leave, a return flight reservation, and a copy of her brother’s tenancy agreement as proof of where she will stay. She also adds a short cover letter explaining the visit. Her brother posts the whole file to ImmD. She hears back in just under four weeks and receives her e-Visa by email.
What made this work was simple: a clear purpose, strong proof of ties at home, and a sponsor who could be verified.
What happens after your Hong Kong visit visa is approved?
Once you have your e-Visa:
- Check every detail: name, passport number, dates and length of stay.
- Book or confirm your flights and accommodation.
- Carry printed copies of your bank statements and return ticket, in case the officer asks.
- Keep within your permitted stay. Overstaying can lead to a ban on future visits.
Hong Kong visit visa, visa-free entry or transit: which applies to you?
People often mix up the three ways of entering Hong Kong. This table shows the difference.
| Option | Who it suits | Do you apply first? |
|---|---|---|
| Visa-free entry | Nationalities on ImmD’s visa-free list, for stays within their allowed period | No, you just show your passport |
| Hong Kong visit visa | Nationalities that need a visa, or anyone staying longer than their visa-free period | Yes, to ImmD |
| Transit | Travellers passing through to another destination | Depends on nationality; some need a transit visa |
If you are only changing planes and staying airside, you usually do not need anything. If you leave the airport, the normal entry rules apply.
How can you make your Hong Kong visit visa application stronger?
ImmD looks for three things: a believable purpose, enough money, and reasons to go home. Here is how to show each one.
Show a clear purpose
Write a short day-by-day plan. For a family visit, explain who you are visiting and how you are related. For business, include an invitation letter on company letterhead that names you, the dates and the purpose of the meetings.
Show you can pay for the trip
Bank statements should cover three to six months and show regular income. A sudden large deposit just before you apply looks like borrowed money. If someone else is paying, include their letter and their statements.
Show you will return home
A letter from your employer confirming your job and approved leave is powerful. Property papers, a business registration, or a letter from your university also help. These show ImmD that your life is at home and your Hong Kong visit visa will be used as intended.
Can children apply for a Hong Kong visit visa?
Yes. Each child needs their own application, even if they travel on a parent’s passport where that is allowed. A parent or guardian signs the form. Include the child’s birth certificate to prove the relationship, and a consent letter if the child travels with only one parent or with another adult.
What if your Hong Kong visit visa is refused?
ImmD does not always give a detailed reason. Look at your file honestly: was the purpose clear, was the money convincing, and were the documents complete? You can reapply with a stronger file. Add the missing proof rather than resending the same papers. A short cover letter explaining what has changed helps.
How can Alif Visa help with your Hong Kong visit visa?
Alif Visa is a UK-registered visa assistance company helping travellers worldwide. We can:
- check your forms, documents and photo before you submit
- help you write a clear cover letter
- arrange flight reservations and hotel bookings for your file
ImmD makes every decision, and no one can guarantee a visa. For general entry rules, read our Hong Kong visa overview, or check your route to see your options.
