How Do You Check Your Sweden Visa Application Status?

check sweden visa status

Short answer: If you applied for a Sweden visitor (Schengen) visa through a visa centre such as VFS Global, you track it on that centre’s website with your reference number and date of birth. The Swedish embassy or consulate makes the decision. Most short-stay visa decisions are made within 15 calendar days, but it can take up to 45 days if more checks are needed.

What does “visa status” mean?

Your visa status shows where your passport and application are: received at the visa centre, sent to the embassy, decision made, or ready to collect. It does not usually say whether the visa was approved until your passport is back, so “decision made” can mean either outcome.

How do you check a Sweden visitor visa status, step by step?

  1. Find your reference number. It is on the receipt or email the visa centre gave you when you submitted biometrics.
  2. Open the visa centre’s tracking page. For VFS Global, go to the Sweden page for the country where you applied and choose “Track your application”.
  3. Enter your details exactly as on the receipt: reference number and date of birth (some countries also ask for your surname).
  4. Read the stage. Typical stages are “received at centre”, “forwarded to embassy”, “processed at embassy” and “ready for collection” or “dispatched by courier”.
  5. Turn on SMS or email updates if the centre offers them, so you don’t need to keep checking.

How long does a Sweden visitor visa take?

Under the EU Visa Code, consulates aim to decide short-stay visas within 15 calendar days of a complete application. In busy seasons or when extra checks are needed, this can stretch to 45 days. Apply early: you can submit up to six months before your trip, and at least 15 days before. For other timings, see our Sweden visa guide.

What if your status hasn’t changed for weeks?

  • Check you’re on the right site. Sweden uses different visa centres in different countries.
  • Look for emails asking for documents. Delays often mean the embassy is waiting for something from you.
  • Contact the visa centre first for tracking issues. They can see the courier and handover status.
  • Contact the embassy only if you are well past 15 days and the centre cannot help. Have your reference number ready.

Is a residence permit tracked the same way?

No. Work, study and family residence permits are decided by the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket). If you applied online, you follow your case by logging into its e-services with your case number. That is a different system from Schengen visitor visas.

What happens after the decision?

You collect your passport or receive it by courier. If approved, check the visa sticker: your name, passport number, dates, number of entries and days allowed. If refused, the refusal form lists the reason and how to appeal. Many refusals come from weak proof of money or unclear travel plans. Our guides on cover letters and Schengen applications help with a stronger reapplication.

How can Alif Visa help?

We prepare and check Schengen visa files before submission, help book appointments, and arrange travel insurance that meets Schengen rules. The decision always belongs to the embassy. Already applied with us? Use Track application to see our stage.

Frequently asked questions

Normally no. Visitor visas are decided by the embassy and tracked through the visa centre. Migrationsverket e-services are for residence permits.

How long does a Sweden Schengen visa take?

Usually up to 15 calendar days after a complete application, and up to 45 days in some cases.

What does “processed at embassy” mean?

The embassy has made a decision and your passport is on its way back to the visa centre. You find out the result when you collect it.
