How Do You Apply for a Hong Kong Visit Visa?

hong kong visit visa application

Short answer: If your passport is not on Hong Kong’s visa-free list, you apply for a visit visa from the Hong Kong Immigration Department (ImmD). You fill in form ID 1003A, attach your passport copy, a photo, proof of money and your travel plans, and submit it online, by post or through a Chinese embassy where you live. Processing normally takes about four weeks, and approved visitors get an e-Visa.

What is a Hong Kong visit visa?

A Hong Kong visit visa is permission to enter Hong Kong for a short stay, such as tourism, visiting family, attending meetings or passing through. It does not allow you to work, study or start a business. Hong Kong runs its own immigration system, separate from mainland China, so a China visa does not cover Hong Kong and a Hong Kong visa does not cover the mainland.

Do you need a visa for Hong Kong?

Many nationalities can visit Hong Kong without a visa for 7 to 180 days. You need a visit visa if your nationality is not on that list, or if you want to stay longer than your visa-free period. Check your nationality on the ImmD “Visa Requirements for Visitors” page before you start. For example, Indian nationals have their own pre-arrival registration rules and apply directly to ImmD rather than through a Chinese embassy.

How do you apply for a Hong Kong visit visa, step by step?

  1. Check you need a visa. Look up your passport on the ImmD visa requirements list.
  2. Download form ID 1003A. It is free on the ImmD website. Fill it in with your passport details exactly as printed.
  3. Find a sponsor if you can. A Hong Kong company or a Hong Kong resident aged 18+ who knows you can fill in form ID 1003B. A sponsor is not compulsory, but it helps ImmD verify your visit.
  4. Collect your documents (see the list below).
  5. Submit the application. Apply online through GovHK, post it to ImmD Headquarters in Tseung Kwan O (directly or via your sponsor), or hand it in at the Chinese embassy or consulate where you live.
  6. Pay the fee. The current amount is on the ImmD fee table. Online you can pay by card; by post you need a cashier order or bank draft, never cash.
  7. Wait for the decision. ImmD normally takes about four weeks after it has every document. It will not start on an incomplete file.
  8. Save your e-Visa. On arrival, show your passport and the e-Visa QR code on your phone or a printed A4 copy.

What documents do you need?

  • Completed form ID 1003A with a recent photo attached
  • Copy of your passport’s personal details page, with issue and expiry dates
  • Proof of money, such as recent bank statements or tax records
  • Proof of employment if you have a job
  • Flight itinerary or other transport plans
  • Proof of your purpose: a tour itinerary, a business invitation letter, or proof of your relationship with the person you are visiting
  • If sponsored: form ID 1003B plus the company’s Business Registration Certificate, or the individual sponsor’s Hong Kong ID card copy

How long does a Hong Kong visit visa take?

ImmD says it normally needs about four weeks after it receives all the documents. Apply at least six weeks before you travel so you have time to answer any questions. If ImmD asks for more papers, the clock effectively restarts when they arrive.

What are the most common mistakes?

  • Applying through the wrong channel. If you live outside Hong Kong, use the Chinese mission in the country where you live, unless your nationality is told to apply directly to ImmD.
  • Sending cash by post. Postal fees must be a cashier order or bank draft.
  • Weak proof of money. One bank statement with a large recent deposit raises questions. Three to six months of normal activity reads better.
  • No clear purpose. “Tourism” with no itinerary is harder to approve than a simple day-by-day plan.
  • Faxing only. You may fax forms first, but ImmD only issues the visa after the originals arrive.

Can someone in Hong Kong sponsor you?

Yes. A sponsor can be a Hong Kong company or an individual who is at least 18, lives in Hong Kong as a genuine resident and knows you personally. The sponsor fills in ID 1003B and adds their ID or company papers. Sponsors can also post the whole application to ImmD on your behalf.
