The UAE system is built around sponsorship rather than around a consulate interview, which makes it fast but also means your options depend on who is willing to sponsor you.
How sponsorship works
Most UAE visit visas are arranged by a sponsor inside the country rather than applied for at an embassy abroad. Airlines flying into the UAE sponsor visas for their passengers. Hotels sponsor guests. Licensed travel agencies and tour operators sponsor tourists. Residents can sponsor family members, and companies can sponsor business visitors.
The sponsor submits the application to the immigration authority, and once approved you receive an electronic visa. There is generally no interview and no appointment at a visa centre for a standard tourist visit, which is why processing is usually measured in days.
Some nationalities receive a visa on arrival or are visa-exempt for short visits, and that list changes periodically. Check your own nationality against the current position before arranging a sponsored visa, because you may not need one.
Duration options and what they mean
Tourist visas are commonly issued for short and longer periods, with single and multiple-entry variants, and the duration granted is stated on the visa. Two dates matter and applicants confuse them: the validity period during which you must enter, and the permitted length of stay from the date of entry.
A visa valid for sixty days with a thirty-day stay does not allow sixty days in the country. You have sixty days to arrive and thirty days from arrival. Note both dates when your visa is issued and calculate your departure date from the entry stamp rather than from the visa issue date.
Longer-term options exist for specific categories, including multi-year visit and remote-working arrangements, each with its own criteria. These are separate products with separate requirements and should not be conflated with a standard tourist visa.

Documents and the details that cause rejections
Requirements are usually modest: a clear colour passport scan of the biographical page with the required remaining validity, a photograph to specification, and depending on the sponsor and category, a confirmed ticket, hotel booking, or the sponsor's documents.
The most common cause of rejection is a name mismatch. UAE systems record names as they appear in the passport, and a discrepancy between the application and the passport, or between the visa and the airline booking, causes problems at check-in. Where your passport shows a single name with no surname, follow the sponsor's guidance carefully rather than splitting it arbitrarily.
Passport validity requirements are applied strictly. A passport with less remaining validity than required will lead to a rejection, and renewing takes longer than most people allow. Check this first, not last.
Extensions, overstays and status changes
Extensions of a visit visa are possible in some circumstances through the immigration authority or a typing centre, for a published fee, and usually must be applied for before the current permitted stay expires. Where extension is not available, you must leave and, if you wish to return, obtain a fresh visa.
Overstay fines are charged per day and accumulate quickly. They must be settled before departure and an unpaid overstay creates problems for future entry. There is no informal resolution to this; keep track of your dates.
Changing from a visit visa to a residence visa, for example after receiving a job offer, follows a defined process that may or may not require you to exit and re-enter depending on current rules. The employer's PRO usually handles it, and the rules on in-country status change have varied over time, so confirm the current position rather than relying on what a colleague did two years ago.
Practical points for travellers
Keep an electronic and printed copy of your visa and your passport page. Airlines check visa status at check-in in your departure city, and a connectivity problem at that moment is not something you want to be solving.
Emirates within the UAE apply some rules differently in practice, particularly around residence and employment, and the immigration authority for Dubai operates its own systems alongside the federal authority. For a tourist visit this rarely matters; for anything involving work or residence it does.
